Transport to Trondheim
Trondheim is situated in central Norway and is easily accessible from all parts of the country. There are direct flights from many European cities
By air
Trondheim Airport Værnes is no more than 30 kilometres away from the city centre. In addition to frequent domestic departures and arrivals, there are also direct flights from Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, London, Prague, Murcia, Alicante, Dubrovnik, Riga and Salzburg.
By train
Should you prefer to travel by train, the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) has trains from Bodø in the north to Kristiansand in the south. ‘Nabotåget’ departs twice a day from Sundsvall in Sweden to Trondheim.
By ship
If you want to travel along the coast you can experience ‘the world’s most beautiful voyage’ aboard Hurtigruten. The ships sail from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north, and offer an amazing opportunity to experience the Norwegian coast from the sea. Whether you wish to travel during summer or winter, both the north and southbound boats depart Trondheim every day all year round.
Kystekspressen, the coastal express, is a catamaran that takes you from Kristiansund to Trondheim three times a day.

Motorway toll
The toll on the E6 motorway to the east of Trondheim (Trondheim – Stjørdal) is NOK 30 + 15 for cars and NOK 60 + 30 for vehicles over 3500 kg. This toll is charged for trips in both directions, 24 hours a day.
The toll for the alternative route: Trondheim – Ranheim – Vikhamar – Malvik – Storsand – Hommelvik – Stjørdal (both direction) is NOK 20 in rush hours (Mon – Fri 07:00-09:00 and 15:00-17:00 ), otherwise NOk 10.
On the E39 road between Øysand and Thamshamn, there are two toll stations: Øysand and Thamshamn (at Orkanger). The toll is NOK 20 for cars and NOK 40 for heavy vehicles at each toll station. Further information at Trøndelag Bomveiselskap.
Coaches
Coaches bringing visitors to the Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace may stop to let passengers get on and off in Bispegata west of the gate to the Cathedral (between Munkegata and Kongsgårdsgata). Please note that parking is prohibited here. Free parking for coaches, with no time limit, is available:
- Tinghusgata: From 01 May – 15 September
- Bispegata at Rådhuset: 01 May – 15 September
- Sverres gate: 01 May – 15 September

Parking in streets
A parking charge is payable in the central areas of the city during the times indicated on the parking signs. Visitors can only park in places marked ‘P -mot avgift- (parking charge)’. To pay for parking, use the parking meter if there is one, or a ticket machine. Please place the receipt from the ticket machine so that it is clearly visible through the windscreen. Ticket machine receipts are not valid for parking meter places.

Hurtigruten – The coastal steamer

Guest harbour
Trondheim has three guest harbours for pleasure crafts: 9 berths at Skansen, 16 berths at Fosen-kaia and 12 berths at the Tavern near the Royal Garden Hotel.: Free of charge for up to 2 hours, then NOK 150 per 24 hours and NOK 200 per 24 hours with electricity at Skansen and Fosen-kaia. The tram from Trondheim runs from St. Olavs gt. in the city centre to Lian in Bymarka at a quarter to and a quarter past each hour. The trip takes 20 minutes and runs past small, old buildings giving a panoramic view of the city from the west. From the terminal you can take a peaceful walk by the waterside, feed the ducks, have a swim or walk along the small trails at Bymarka.
